Not only am I fascinated with both actors, Giamatti and Torturro but I truly relish scenes of brilliant theater.
This is my first knowledge of Eugène lonesco. He seems to have taken delight in discarding convention. The dialogue here is magnificent. The actors delivery is spot on and riveting. I so wish I could have seen this.
Beyond the production itself is the theme of the work. Rhinocerus is a observation of conformity. A rhino walks through town and people start becoming rhinos. It’s a commentary on fascism. Ionesco published this in 1959, shortly after WWII. How hard is it to maintain one’s individuality when pressured to succumb to societal influence. What inner fortitude must be required to withstand the allure of conviction?
